Just Another Foodie Post

Plantain chips, prepared by Chef Sevak. Thinly slice green plantains with a vegetable peeler, fry in very hot oil. Then salt.

Guacamole, also prepared by Chef Sevak. Mexican food is non-existent here and guacamole is one of Sevak's favorite things. He's looking forward to avocado season because they're still rather expensive.

 Ratatouille, before being cooked

Caught some wild yeast from the air and made my own sourdough starter. Was missing San Francisco, I guess. Also didn't want to have to buy yeast.

Finished product

"Cook-up rice." There are so many versions. This is mine: Sauté garlic, onion, and carrot in oil. Add rice, cooked beans (I used red ones that I cooked myself, but you can use canned), coconut milk, salt, and cayenne pepper. Add chopped green onions toward the end of cooking.

A miracle happened one day at the grocery store. Later we found out that Shell Gas Station also had butter (for 1/3 cheaper!) so we stopped by there another day and got some more. :) Also bought some plain yogurt! Shell Station wins!

Someone was doing math on our plantain

Breadfruit, approximately $1.50 (USD)

Remove the inner core and use like a potato. I boiled small chunks and made breadfruit salad tonight.

I have never heard of catching wild yeast in the air! Need more details on that! Your photos are beautiful by the way. Sevak's plantains look very tasty as does everything else.

Apparently yeast just floats around in the air. So you mix together some flour and water and let them come visit your buffet. After a couple of days of "feeding" your starter, it will start to bubble and expand. If you google how to make your own sourdough you can learn more. Breadfruit is an actual fruit that grows on a tree, but it is similar in texture to a potato.
