Bunnies and Baking

Before we left for Ethiopia, somehow Rose and Jasmine got it into their minds that they wanted bunnies. We had already planned on getting chickens, so I guess they figured we should go all the way and set up a full-fledged farm. Sevak asked around and found a bunny guy who came last Saturday to drop off the furballs. Rose and Jasmine had already selected two bunnies based on photos they'd seen, but the guy brought an extra because he wasn't sure which of the lighter ones they wanted. Of course we couldn't send a lone bunny back, so we bought all three. Simon wasn't initially into the idea, but he really took a liking to Cottontail...so now he and Zinnia share her. :)

Cottontail is peeking out of the bottom of the picture. She was the most expensive of the three due to four generations of selective breeding. She is also the oldest at six months, whereas Flopsy and Mopsy are three months. 

Poor Yuka was sooooo overcome with excitement when the bunnies came. We had to carefully isolate her whenever the kids took them out. Isn't this just a pitiful photo of her watching longingly from the balcony? She kept whining. One can either assume that she was (a) jealous, (b) excited, or (c) hungry. As much as my heart wants to go for (b), I'm sure her natural instincts cause her to see those new friends as very tasty treats.

The guys were pretty enthused to see a Siberian husky. The one on the left is the bunny pro, and the one on the right is going to line us up with some chickens!

She spends so much time just sitting and watching those babies.

In addition to bunnies, baking has been keeping us occupied. There was a Holiday Cookie Bake-Off at the embassy, and as I am constantly craving some kind of purpose or diversion, I signed up Jasmine :) (there was a "young baker" prize and I thought that might be a more realistic goal...plus a way to involve the kids). Well, we don't have any cookie sheets, nor a wide array of ingredients, so we went for our old standby: no-bake cookies. I don't have any pictures of the chocolate/peanut butter/oat goodness, but these are the tags the kids made for each package: 

We just found out that she won in the "Young Baker" category! We also got to exchange our cookies for some of the other entrants' cookies. Yum!

Jasmine's class has also been doing some fun things via zoom this week, as it is the last week before break. Yesterday she made sugar cookies with her schoolmates. 

Aluminum foil worked decently in lieu of actual baking sheets.

Jasmine also loves avocados, and they are plentiful here. Here she is with a giant one:

Finally, here is a picture of a pizza box from a local eatery. Get a load of that address! 

HAHA! No more street names or numbers for the next couple of years. Even when we order stuff for delivery, we have to clarify our GPS coordinates by providing landmarks in our area.
